Hey ya'll
These, what Terri recalls as "Scary Selkies" are actually Irish merfolk or Merrows.
While the females are generally hauntingly beautiful, the males are described as brutish in appearence, possesing a pig-like snout, tusks and red beady eyes. They are, however, quite friendly and jovial.
The merrow always wears a red-feathered headpiece which enables it to cross from our world to their watery one. On land, if the merrow were to remove such headpiece, it would transform into a beautiful human being with webbed hands or a quaint cattle.
Should a human steal the merrow's feathered-headpiece, it would be forever bound to that human until it finds it once more. Unlike Selkies who usually return to the sea when they find their seal-skin, most Merrow females are content being human wives considering their males are (even amongst their kind) considered quite ugly!
